Al Wootton's second album, "We Have Come To Banish The Dark," marks his return to Trule, his own label. This record, born from dystopian times, is charged with energy and restrained intensity, avoiding oppression or nihilism. It carries a theme of unity, liberation, and resistance against a world growing darker due to factors such as rising fascism, hypercapitalism, and right-wing politics. However, it maintains a constant sense of hope and light, evident in tracks like "Devarim" and the closing moments of "May Your Angels Of Light Accept Him."
In this album, Wootton draws from his experiences playing in post-punk bands during his youth and his long-standing appreciation of Metal. "We Have Come to Banish The Dark" evokes the industrialism of artists like Chris and Cosey, Coil, and Throbbing Gristle, with traces of the UK Hardcore continuum, Jungle, and UK Garage. The rhythms are flexible and light, providing a contrast to the monochrome industrial sound palette.
Over the course of nine tracks, Wootton explores various rhythmic styles, from techno steppers to house and minimal Drum and Bass influences, while maintaining a cohesive sound throughout the album. "We Have Come To Banish The Dark" offers a rewarding listening experience that caters to both ecstatic club moments and deep, repeated listening, showcasing high energy and intricate sound design.
